James Hamilton Edwards was the third child born to William Franklin Harper and Martha Jane (Reeves) Edwards. He was educated in the common schools of Pike County and, because he grew up during Reconstruction, did not have the opportunity for advancement. He married Queen Victoria Hickman on 5 December 1878 in Catalpa, Alabama. They were the parents of eleven children. He was a farmer and self-trained lawyer and served two terms in the Alabama House of Representatives (1903 and 1919). He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1914. Prior to becoming involved in state politics, he wrote so many scathing letters to the editor of the Troy Messenger that he was nicknamed "Pitchfork Jim."
