William Franklin Harper Edwards was the son of James Harvey and Sina (McMichael) Edwards. He married Martha Jane Reeves on 5 February 1850 in Pike County.

He was educated in Georgia to be a schoolmaster. He taught school in the Ebenezer community from 1851-1858. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he went to Georgetown, GA and enlisted in the 3rd Georgia Calvary under General Joseph Wheeler. He entered the war as a chaplain and attained the rank of Brevet 1st Lieutenant. His left arm was amputated much later in his life as a result of lead poisoning from a bullet that was never removed from his arm.

After the war, Frank Edwards served as a Primitive Baptist preacher in several local churches, including Old Canaan near Ebenezer. He is said to have been a colorful character who loved to keep the politicians stirred up as his son James would later do.

He was the father of ten children, nine sons and one daughter. His son Charles Harvey Edwards went to Texas and, according to a descendant, died of pneumonia in 1907 during a visit to Troy. There were three sons who did not live to adulthood: William (b. 1861) and twin boys (b. 1869) who were not named on the 1870 census.
