Alton Evening Telegraph, Alton, Illinois, March 27, 1917:

While kindling a fire in a stove in a box car where he was living and using gasoline as a starter instead of coal oil, Walter Sloan, a section hand of the Chicago & Alton railroad, was probably fatally burned this morning shortly before 7 o'clock. Sloan was making the fire in a cook stove and he put gasoline in the fire to start it. The gasoline ignited and flaring up, set fire to Sloan's clothing. His wife and child were close by and in the conflagration that followed, they were slightly burned also.

The family of three have been living the past three weeks in a little box car house on the cut off just north of College Avenue. The car sits on the ground at the cut-off switch and is directly behind the Wm. Fairbanks house on Barton Avenue. Members of the Fairbanks family rushed to the assistance of the Sloan family when cries for help were heard and they succeeded in putting out the fire. Sloan's clothes were all burned off and his injuries are very serious. An Ambulance was called immediately and he was hurried to the hospital where it was said this afternoon his condition is serious.

The parents of Mrs. Sloan lie on Shields Street in Bozzatown and she and her child were taken there. A physician attended them but their injuries are not considered serious.

Alton Evening Telegraph, Alton Illinois, March 28, 1917:

The coroner's jury that conducted an inquest over the body of Walter Sloan last evening returned a verdict of death from burns he received while lighting a fire with gasoline at his home. Mr. Sloan, a section hand on the C. & A. Railroad, died at the St. Joseph's Hospital late yesterday afternoon.

He sustained his burns while lighting a fire at his home in Upper Alton yesterday morning. His wife and their child who were in the box car home at the time were also badly burned. He leaves his little family with no property or life insurance.
