Uncle Roy was the 6th of 9 children born to Scott and Delia Ann Box Alcorn who married on June 3, 1911.

His paternal grandparents were:
Lafayette Alcorn and Alice (Love) Alcorn

His maternal grandparents were:
Maston "Matthew" Wiley Box and
Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" (Seats) Box

Roy married Virgie Lois Carter on October 23, 1953 and had 5 children: 3 sons and 2 daughters. He was Chairman of the Education Department at George Peabody College for Teachers (now known as the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, TN when an auto accident in 1973 took his life.

Educator Died In Auto Accident--Dr. Roy Alcorn, 47, Buried Saturday in Ellsinore

Funeral service was held Saturday at Ellsinore for Dr. Roy Alcorn, noted educator who was killed in a car accident at 11 p.m., Tuesday, April 10th in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Alcorn was chairman of the department of education and professor of school administration at George Peabody College at the time of his death.

Born Dec. 3, 1925, at Williamsville, he grew up in the Ellsinore area, and was well known and respected in this region.

Attending high school iin Ellsinore, he dropped out for one year, then returned to complete high school there, then on to college where he received a B.S. Degree in Education from Southeast Mo. State College at Cape Girardeau. Upon receiving his degree he took a teaching job at the Upper Ten Mile School where he taught for two years, then taught at Grandin and Ellsinore, then became principal at Waynesville. From there he moved to Eminence where he served as superintendent. He also served for a time as administrative assistant to the late Congressman A. S. J. Carnahan.

After leaving Eminence he earned M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in education from George Peabody College. With his new title of doctor, he went to Wilmington, Del., where he served as assistant superintendent. He later accepted the superintendent's job at Chester, Va., a suburb of Richmond in Chesterfield County.

In 1969, Dr. Alcorn became superintendent of schools at Roanoke, Va., and was given the job of leading the city school system through the difficult times of federal court ordered desegregation. He succeeded in this effort, and he was hailed for his work in maintaining the school system with desegregation being accomplished.

During the summer of 1972 Dr. Alcorn left Roanoke to assume the role he held at George Peabody College until his death.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Deal Alcorn of Ellsinore; his wife, the former Virgie Carter of Ellsinore; five children, Danny, a student at Peabody College, Martha Lynn, a student at Barnard College in New York City, and Joseph, Beth and Walter, all of the home; six brothers, Merton and Cecil Alcorn of Poplar Bluff; Scottie L. Alcorn of Bridgeton, Percy Alcorn of Berkeley, Bill Alcorn of Manchester, and Donald Lee Alcorn of Ferguson; and one sister, Mildred Magill of Cheyenne, Wyo.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ellsinore Methodist Church of which Dr. Alcorn was a member, with burial in the Hilltop Cemetery by McSpadden Funeral Home.
