Rosina Catherine Bauder was born to Fred and Minnie (Fanselau) Bauder on Jan. 10, 1905, on the family homestead north of Bethune. She was baptized as an infant at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended the schools in the Blue Valley District with her brothers, Paul and Albert, and sister, Alice. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1923. She attended Colorado State Teachers College for one year, then taught in the country schools north of Burlington to earn money so she could return to college for another year, where she received a Lifetime Teaching License.

On Feb. 4, 1928, she married John S. Schaal. To this union were born seven children: Lawrence Lee, Rudolf Roy, Beulah Pauline, Ruby Lucille, Josephine, Elmer James, and Wilma Jean. This was the time of the Great Depression and The Dirty Thirties Dustbowl. Times were difficult and Rose and John worked long and hard to provide for their family. They lived on a far north of Burlington, then rented farms in the Smokey Hill area before moving 13 miles northwest of Burlington where they bought a farm. To help make the farm payment Rosina taught at the local country schools when times were hardest. In October of 1969 they bought a house in Burlington and retired from the farm. She was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church where she and John raised their children. She was a charter member of United Methodist Women. Her family and her faith were the mainstays of her life. She always made time to help when she was needed by family, friends, relatives, and neighbors. Rosina died Monday, July 12, 1999, in Burlington.

Rosina was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, husband, son Lawrence; two sons-in-law, Carroll Schahrer and Merl Munson; two grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her children, Rudy and his wife Lynda, Beulah Schahrer, Ruby Munson of Burlington, Jo Calkins and her husband Loran of Denver, Elmer and his wife Beverly of Martinez, Calif., and Wilma Sanchez of Burlington, 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren, and her sister Alice Haygood and her husband Larry of Las Vegas, Nev., numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
