Susannah "Susan" Vernon was born about 1815 in Stokes County, North Carolina, the youngest child of Jonathan Vernon, Jr. (1767-1854) and Mary Vernon née Cox (1773-1844). Between 1816 and 1820 the Vernon family moved from North Carolina to Jackson County, Ohio. In about 1831 Susan Vernon had a son, Isaac Vernon.
On April 9, 1835 Susan Vernon married Terry Russell in Jackson County, Ohio, in a marriage ceremony performed by Peter Aleshire. Susan and Terry Russell resided in Lick township, Jackson County, Ohio in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 U.S. census. In October 1861, Terry Russell and his son Emanuel Russell enlisted in the union army during the Civil War. Terry Russell died of disease on August 29, 1862. Susan Russell filed for a Widow's Claim and was granted $8.00 per month.
Susan Vernon was still residing in Lick, Ohio as of September 1867 but by the 1870 U.S. census she had moved to Van Buren township in Clay County, Indiana. She was still residing in Van Buren township in the 1880 U.S. census. Susan Russell died thereafter, probably in 1895. Her grave has not been located but it is believed that she is buried in Old Hill Cemetery in Brazil, Clay County, Indiana, where he daughter Cornelia was buried in 1870 and where he daughter Louisa E. Bell was buried in 1940.
