Robert Vernon Barnum, 83, of Glen Ellyn, formerly of LaSalle, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Sunrise Senior Living in Glen Ellyn.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00 PM Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Mueller-Pagani Funeral Home in LaSalle with Rev. Danira Parra, pastor of Tonica United Methodist Church officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the LaSalle-Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Burial will be at 10:30 AM Monday in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation will be 2-5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Barnum was born July 4, 1928 in Clarkston, MI to Vernon and Marguerite (Lumley) Barnum. He married Lynn Alleman on November 21, 1988 in Las Vegas, NV.

Mr. Barnum was a member of the Class of 1947 at Belvidere High School and the Class of 1952 at the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Agriculture and Economics. He was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity. He was very active in sports, including Track and Field at the U of I. Mr. Barnum was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. After returning from Korea, he entered into the insurance industry, where he would remain until retirement. Mr. Barnum was a pillar and respected member of the LaSalle area insurance community for many years. He worked as a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter at River Valley Insurance Agency (formerly Liesse-Barnum Insurance Agency) in LaSalle, where he was a partner. He was active in Oglesby Rotary Club for many years. As a member of the 13th Engineer Combat Battalion Association, he participated in a revisit trip back to Korea. He was a member of the University of Illinois Varsity I Association. He also enjoyed grilling, coin collecting, gardening and travelling.

Survivors include four children, Robin Barnum of Sherman, TX, Fawn (Jeff Lawn) Over of West Chicago, Scott Barnum of Dallas, TX and Heather (Jim) Bilcer of Darien; their mother and his former wife, Corinne Bruno of LaSalle; four step-children, Kathryn (William) Wilson of Las Vegas, NV, Charles (Rita) Alleman of Tonica, Thomas (Edie) Alleman of Tonica and David (Cheryl) Alleman of Utica; one brother, Donald (Sandra) Barnum of Rockford; two sisters, Lois (Carl) Warner of Farmington, NM and Shirley (Richard) Johnson of Mountain Home, AK; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Barnum of Jackson, MI and one brother-in-law, Melvin Robertson of Hampshire.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn on January 2, 2006; his parents; two sisters, Betty Robertson and baby Eloris and one brother, Clair Barnum.
