St George Parish - 1857

In 1852, immigrants from Erbach (Schwabenland) near Ulm Wuerttemberg Germany decided to come to America. These immigrants arrived in New York and soon found they disliked the big city. The group then moved onto Chicago where they worked and studied the English language for a few months. When the cholera epidemic broke out, they left right away and came to Minnesota.

In 1855, more settlers came to the area. Some made homes in New Ulm while the rest preferring to farm settled in the St George area. In the following year, there were more settlers to join the St George group. All these settlers being Catholic were to become the charter members of St George Parish.

On September 26 1856, Father Valentine Sommereisen arrived and celebrated Mass at George Greens' log house. During the fall of 1857, Father Sommereisen was given permission to start the new parish of St George. Due to most of the settlers being named "George", St George was made patron of the new parish.

Work to build a church began immediately. Logs were cut and hauled to construct the walls. An altar and confessional were also built. The church was erected in the spring of 1858 approximately where the third and present church now stands. This log church in St George became the first Catholic Church to be built in the territory.
