Born Oct. 1, 1914, in Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late John D. and Hulda (Wincer) Laird.
He is survived by: his four children, Donald Laird and his wife, Nola, Isabelle Snyder, Joyce Beers and her husband, Ronald, all of Lewistown, and Betty Huffman and her husband, Roy Donald, of Mifflin; two sisters, Zelda Baker, of Mifflintown, and Esther Laird, of Mifflin; and he leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were: his wife, Bernice (Kahley) Weaver; his companion of 28 years, Eleanor (Worrall) Weiand; daughters, Zelda Fidler and Arlene Porch; sisters, Lottie Ferguson, Mary Peachy, Catherine Hoar, Mabel Wagner, Anna Druckenmiller, Helen Shirk and Betty George; brothers, John Laird, Cleo Laird, Harrison Laird and Paul Laird; son-in-law, James L. Snyder Sr. and grandson, James L. Snyder Jr.
Alonza was a Methodist by faith.
Mr. Laird worked as a rigger at Standard Steel Corp., Burnham, for 33 years, before retiring in 1977.
In his earlier years, Lonzie enjoyed hunting, camping, traveling and wood working; however, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St. Mifflintown, with the Rev. Matthew Jury officiating. Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy.
Viewing was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2012, at the funeral home.
