Arrived in America with brother Evan around early 1700 and settled in Cumru in 1720. He was granted 1000 acres in Cumru, Berks, Pa. He married Jane Pugh in Chester, Pa on Dec 2, 1706. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Before he died he divided his 1000 acres into five parcels for his children. Parcel 1 was at the mouth of the Wyomissing, 2 was on the Angelica, 3 was on the the Wyomissing, 4 was on the Cacossing and five was another area of the Wyomissing creek.
Some stones of his church cemetery were removed at some point and some were found in the basement of the Babtist church at 5th and Chestnut Sts, Reading, Pa. One of those stones was for Hugh Jones. The inscription reads: "In memory of Hugh Jones who died Sept ye 19, 1734, age 62"
This account was from a story in the Reading Eagle- May 23, 1926
that there is legal proof of the existence of a Lutheran congregation there, there are other evidences that it was there more than 150 years ago and that it remained until about 80 or 90 years ago.
Certainly David Jones, of Chester County, would not have attached a codicil to his will bequeathing half an acre of ground as a burying ground to a Lutheran congregation in Cumru township, Berks County, if there never had been any church there. And General Anthony Wayne would not have attached his signature if it all had been a mere myth. Hugh Jones, Davis's father, had died and was buried on that plot in 1734. As the codicil bears date of 1770, it will be seen that it had existed for fully 40 years at that time already.
