George Hawk was the son of David Hawk and Eleanor Huss.

George served with Company F, 72 Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted on November 1, 1861 at Green Creek, Ohio. He was captured at Guntown, Mississippi on June 11, 1864 and held until February 23, 1865. On February 28, 1870, George married Rebecca Baker. George and Rebecca had children: Geneva, Chauncey, Ethel, Nettie, Charles, William and John.
