Firecracker Thrown On Man’s Porch Is Boy’s Death Cause
FULTON, Miss., Dec. 26 – (A) – Five youths were tossing fire crackers on the porch of 60-year-old Curtis Spencer near here early yesterday when a shotgun charge slammed into the heart of one of them.
John V. Wilemon, 19, died immediately. His four companions fled, and returned with officers.
Sheriff Jim Gilliland said Spencer, a farmer and former school teacher, was charged with murder and freed under $5,000 bond. A coroner’s jury met at the scene of the slaying at 3 a.m. and decided Spencer killed the boy unintensionally (sic).
Gilliland said Spencer told him that he though the boys would “go away and leave me alone if I fired my gun off, I didn’t aim at any of them.”
He said he didn’t know he had hit one of them until the officers came to his home in the Clay community.
Wilemon, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wilemon, was home for the holidays from his job at Zion, Ill.
