Mr. Clifton Baird Atkins, 81, of Ararat, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Atkins was born August 29, 1931, in Surry County, the son of the late John William and Ira Lou Atkins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Porter Atkins of Ararat, NC. and his sister, Alma Godfrey of Sanford, NC. Mr. Atkins graduated from Rockford High School and Piedmont Bible College. He was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church in Mount Airy. Upon early retirement from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, he worked for Hennis and Pilot Freight Carriers. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Atkins of the home; seven children Helen and John Gwyn of Winston-Salem, Nancy Stevenson of Ararat. NC. and the late Herbert Lee Stevenson, Johnny and Janet Atkins of Mount Airy, David and Pauline Atkins of Ararat, VA, Audrey and Dennis Freeman of Mount Airy, Twain Atkins of Ararat, NC, and Joseph Atkins of Kernersville; sixteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral service will be held Friday, April 20, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Temple Baptist Church, with the Rev. Zane Fishel officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
