Rebecca Cooley Loomis was one of 10 children born to Chester Cooley (1790-1857) and Azubah Johnson (1797-1869). She has a rich and well-documented history of both sides of her family back to a Pilgrim-era immigrant, Benjamin Cooley (1617-1684) of Ireland and wife Sarah --- (d. 1684), who settled in Springfield, Hampden, Massachussetts. Her great-grandfather is Lathrop Cooley, a prominent Revolutionary War figure.
Seven generations of Cooleys settled near Springfield and around Hampden County, Massachusetts, until Rebecca's father moved the family between 1823-1829 (Source: US Census records & sibling birth records) to Mantua, Portage, Ohio, where Rebecca married Russel(l) Loomis on 15 May 1834. The marriage record (application) completed by her father Chester states her age as 14 (b. 1820) but other records (including death certificate) indicate her birth year as 1817 (age 17).
Rebecca and Russel(l) lived in:
1840 US Census - Camden, Lorain, OH (3 children)
1850 US Census - Marion, IL (6 children)
1860 US Census - Cheshire, Allegan, MI (5 children)
1870 US Census - Cheshire, Allegan, MI (Rebecca widow, 2 children)
1880 US Census - Cheshire, Allegan, MI (Rebecca widow, 1 child)
1900 US Census - Bloomingdale Village, Van Buren, MI (living with dau. Mary & her family)
1910: Death, Bloomingdale, Van Buren, MI
1910: Burial, Spring Grove Cemetery, Bloomingdale, Van Buren, MI, according to MI Death Certificate.
Rebecca outlived her husband Russel(l) by 53 years, and died of old age, just 8 days shy of her 93rd birthday.
Death certificate states she was buried in "Spring Grove Cemetery, 01 Feb 1910." No headstone is available for photography; so she may be buried with husband Russell; however, there is no engraving on his stone. Need to confirm with cemetery sexton.
