James H. Morgan was born 6 September 1837 near Table Grove, Fulton County, Illinois, the second child of ten born to William M. and Ester (Walreth/Walrath/Walrod) Morgan. James died 31 January 1926 in Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado. Of James' ten siblings, only five reached adulthood, two sisters [Hannah J. (Morgan) Fike and Lydia E. (Morgan) Hollar] and two brothers (Jacob W. Morgan and Charles Ripley Morgan). Of his four older half-siblings, only two half-brothers reached adulthood (Peter Wheeler Morgan and Walter Ralph Morgan).

James served in the Civil War for the Union in Company F, 84th Regiment Illinois Infantry (Fulton County Volunteers). He enlisted 7 August 1862 and mustered out 8 June 1865. In 1870 James and his half-brother Walter Ralph Morgan were both in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana Territory, before he came back to McDonough County.

James married (1)Mary M. Harmon 8 October 1868 in Fulton County, Illinois. Mary was born 14 February 1849 in IL and died in childbirth 22 January 1873. Their daughter Ida E. Morgan died 6 months and 2 days later. Both Mary and Ida are buried in Bailey Cemetery, Section 7, Fulton County, IL. Mary's parents were Joseph and Nancy P. (Brown) Harmon.

James married (2)Alice Jenette Markham 18 March 1875 in McDonough County, IL. Alice was born in 1851 in Ohio, died in 1880 and is buried next to James in Bushnell Cemetery. They had two children, 1)Charles A. Morgan born 1876 in IL, died 16 Feb 1903, buried in the same section with his parents; and 2)Edith Morgan born about 1879 in IL.

James married (3)Isabelle Stambaugh 4 April 1889 in McDonough County, IL. She was born 22 January 1860 in Wisconsin, died 3 December 1928 in Boulder, Colorado, and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Section S-1/2, Lot 135, Block 21, Denver, Colorado, next to her daughter and son-in-law Myrtle "Marie" B. (Stambaugh) Peterson Price and Charles W. Price. Marie was born 10 Sep 1880 in IL, died Apr 1974 CO. Isabelle's parents were Jacob and Celia A. Stambaugh.

James and Isabelle moved from Bushnell to Boulder between 1900-1910 and purchased their home at 1908 11th Street where they lived the rest of their lives. They had no children.
