Dorcas Marie Pilcher was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Carter, Beckham County, OK. She was the youngest of six children born to Josiah Micagiah (J.M. or "Cage") Pilcher and Lillie Mae Fleming Pilcher.

The Pilcher family had a 320-acre farm where they raised livestock, cotton, wheat.
In 1928 the family home burned to the ground and the family lost everything in the fire. They used an old barn for their sleeping quarters, and a tent for food storage and preparation, until they were able to move, by horse, a small house onto the land. Soon after, J.M., a retired teacher and not-so-successful farmer, sold the wheat and cotton crops for cash and went into the dairy business.

The Pilcher sisters were artistic and talented, and Dorcas, along with her sister Betty, learned the fine art of china painting. Dorcas was named after her mother's sister, aunt Dorcas Fleming, also a talented porcelain artist.

Dorcas had health issues throughout her short life. Family members who remember her describe her as 'sickly,' though no one knows what caused her ailments. The records have disappeared over the years, though I plan to request a death certificate to see if it will answer any questions.

Dorcas was never married. She died at the age of 25.
