Sam was born in the area of Burleson County which became a part of Lee County when the latter county was formed following the Civil War. He was the son of Titus Howard Mundine and Catherine B. (Merrill) Mundine. He was thought to be involved in the troubles that occurred in the McDade, Blue, and Knobbs areas during the late 1800s. He "escaped" to Carroll County, Mississippi where he married Annie Mary DeLapp, daughter of George DeLapp and Ida Laws, ; half of his children were born there and carried the surname of "Bender".
