So far the father of Catherine & Marguerite Merrill has not been identified, other than he was a "Doctor in Houston." A Joseph Merrill bought 300 acres in Nacodoches Co.,TX 12/20/1839. In the 1850 census the only Merrill in Houston was Catherine living with the Martin Snell family. Martin's wife was Emily Hadnot & they had an infant daughter also named Emily. The Snell's & Hadnot's were from NC & in the early deeds along with the Mundine's. Also listed was Mary Jane Smith who was probably Marguerite Jane Merrill, obviously the girls father had died before 1850 & they were living with friends or relatives. what is curious is that the birth dates are off by several years and Catherine is stated as being born in MO & Mary Jane in TN!! Further research needs to be done to trace the Merrill line. Death certificates for these women may be more accurate than the tombstone inscriptions we have. The Merrill family has been traced to the English ancestor in the 1600's, all we need is our "missing link"!
