According to a handwritten note in the Bassett Virginia Library, Hiram served in the Civil War as 2nd Lieut. Company K 53rd Virginia Infantry.
Hiram died November 30 1904 and was followed by Martha on May 12 1908.
They were buried on the old home place in Bassett Va. These graves have since been moved to the Bassett Family Cemetery in Bassett Virginia.
