Mary Dowling was born in County Kildare, Ireland on May 15, 1812 to parents Edward and Mary Dowling. She married John Molloy, also a native of County Kildare, who was born there in 1800.

In 1848, John and Mary came to the United States, living first at Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, then settling near Middleton, Wisconsin in Dane County in 1858. It was there that John purchased land and began farming. They brought with them from Ireland some $800 in gold, which was a considerable sum in those days.

The Molloys were parents of seven girls and two boys, with the six oldest children born in Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland and the three youngest in Wisconsin. It is believed that two daughters, both named Anastasia, died at a very young age, likely before the family made its journey to America.

On May 10, 1883, John died at Middleton, Wisconsin. After the death of her husband, Mary lived about a mile from her son, Peter, in Wisconsin. Her home was a stone house with walls two feet thick. She died at Montrose, Wisconsin on December 7, 1898 at age 86.

Mary's name is on a stained glass window in the parish church at Pine Bluff, Wisconsin. Mary and John were buried in St. Mary's Cemetery at Pine Bluff, next to the church.
