Peter Molloy was born near Castledermot in southern County Kildare, Ireland on April 6, 1845, the son of John Molloy and Mary (Dowling) Molloy. He was baptized on April 13, 1845. His baptismal sponsors were Michael Nolan and Bridget Dowling. When three years old, he came to America with his parents, settling in Dane County, Wisconsin.

On January 30, 1873, Peter married Bridget Hurley in Belleville, Wisconsin. She was born in Orange County, New York on October 6, 1850, the daughter of John Hurley and Mary (Moran) Hurley. Peter and Bridget became parents of four boys and six girls, all born in Wisconsin. At some point, they acquired the farm formerly owned by Peter's parents in Middleton Township.

In early 1898, Peter and Bridget sold their 200-acre farm for $11,000 to H. F. Wilke, then sold their property a short time later at a public auction on March 15, 1898. The family then relocated to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin for a few months where Peter owned a mercantile business. On August 4, 1898, they left Wisconsin and settled in Hancock County, Iowa, residing on a farm southwest of Britt.

The family moved into Britt in 1903, near the end of Fairgrounds Street (now 3rd Street NW). Peter was a great reader and kept posted on all the events of the times, and was especially interested in politics. He also played the violin. His death, due to liver cancer, occurred on March 12, 1919 at Britt.
