The son of Jefferson & Ann (Kernan) Worthington, in 1860, he was a telegrapher living in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, but clearly had to have received some medical training.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg April 1, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Bladensburg, Prince George's County, Maryland, May 17 as the assistant surgeon of the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry (159th Pennsylvania). He was promoted to surgeon May 17, 1865, and honorably discharged with the regiment July 31, 1865.

He married Annie Margarette Cornman October 27,1863, in Carlisle and fathered Mary (b. @1861), Raymond Cornman (b. @1864 or 67), Ella (b. 06/08/70, d. 11/06/71), and Marian B. (b. 12/29/71 - married Rudolph Kelker Spicer).
