From E. E. Smith

D. C. Smith was born October 14 1837 in Stockbridge, Ingham, Michigan, the Smith family having moved from Omandago, Niagara, New York, the previous year. D. C.'s dad, Alden Smith (1804-1895), a farmer, was born in Surry, Cheshire, New Hampshire, and was a descendant of
Mary Allerton Cushman
,

Mary Anna Warren Bartlett (1610-1683) and Mary Warren Bartlett

and John Holmes (1612-1667)--all of whom were passengers on the Mayflower! His mother, Penelope Elizabeth Cooper, of New Jersey, was the daughter of James B. Cooper (1792-1846), a stonemason, and the granddaughter of Commodore James Britton Cooper (1761-1854), a Quaker who fought under Henry "Light Horse" Lee during the American Revolutionary War and who in the War of 1812 was in charge of gunboats off the New Jersey coast.

D.C. had four brothers and five sisters: Luther Andrew Smith (1829-1902), Cornelius Brainard Smith (1829-1902), Thomas Cornelius Smith (1844-1890), Charles W. Smith (1852- ), Martha Jane Smith Putnam Huston (1833-1915), Sylvia Azubah Smith Cloucher (1854- ), Julia Ann Smith Van Etten (1841-1892), Melissa Smith (1845- ), and Orpha Marie Smith Power (1847-1890).

D. C. Smith married Miss Andora Keesee (1841-1920), of Chappell Hill, Washington, Texas, on December 26, 1864, in Chappell Hill, Washington, Texas. From there, the Smith family moved first to Brenham, Texas, and later to Hamilton County, where D. C. served as county judge.

D. C. and Andora were the parents of nine children: Five girls-Edwina D. (1867- ), Mariietta Smith Connally (1868-1958), Carrie (1871-1875), and Ida Mae Smith Connally (1875-1965; and yes, the two surviving Smith sisters married brothers; and four boys-Alden Keesee Smith (1873-1952),
Denton Clarence Smith (1877-1973) Denton Clarence Smithname,
Walstein Smith (1878-1963), and Luther Smith (1881-1946).

D. C. Smith died on November 10, 1882, in Jonesboro, Coryell, Texas, having driven back fro the McLennan County Courthouse in Waco in an open buggy whereupon he was caught in a "Blue Norther". The 1880 entry for D. C. Smith notes that he had lost a left arm above the elbow (presumably as a Union solider during the American Civil War, although no records for a Dewitt Clinton Smith have been found, and numerous David Smiths from Michigan exist).
