Luther Andrew Smith, a carpenter, was the son of Alden Smith (1804-1895), of Surry Cheshire, New Hampshire, and his wife, Penelope Elizabeth Cooper(1811-1885) of New Jersey. The Smith family lived in upstate New York until they moved to Michigan in 1836. Luther was the oldest child of five sons and five daughters.

Luther Smith married Saran Higgison in Wayne County, Michigan, in 1855. They were the parents of two children: Celia A.Smith Hammond (1858-1940) and Herbert Andrew Smith (1862-1921).
