Adam Lemp was born May 5, 1833 in Treis an der Lumda, and baptized on May 12, 1833. His parents were Christoph Lemp (1800-1854) and Anna Margretha Schöp (1799-1837), both of Treis an der Lumda. His paternal grandparents were Johann Balthasar Lemp (1775-1813) and Elisabeth Zecher (1774-1834) and maternal grandparents Henrich Balthasar Schöpf (1754-1829) and Elisabetha Formhals (1767-1830).

His siblings who moved from Germany to the United States included: sister Margaret (Lemp) Fischbach (1826-1881), sister Anna Catherine (Lemp) Nickolai (1830-1905) and brother John Lemp (1835-1917).
