Fourth of five children born in Drumack, Rasharkin, Co Antrim to Edward Dempsey and his first wife Jane Hay. They were all baptised at First Kilrea Presbyterian in County Derry, about 20 miles away.

In 1832 the Montreal Emigration Society brought the entire family to Prescott, Ontario.

In 1857 William was headed to his job as a stagecoach driver in the Village of Long Island, Ontario, when the Kingston ferry boat slid out of control on the ice and was swamped.

According to the Kingston Daily News three swam to shore, seven were rescued by young men on shore but sadly five drowned, including William, age 29.
