James Fairchild was born in London, England on May 9, 1834. At the age of eleven, he was apprenticed to a jeweler and gilder and learned the art of watch gilding. In August 1859, they immigrated to Canada and later moved to New York, where James was engaged in silver plating. When World War I broke out, he eventually moved to Elgin, Illinois working in the watch factory. On April 3, 1879, his wife Mary Ann died.
