According to the Town Vital Collections for Massachusetts Barnes Cooley was born August 8 1748 in the town of Brimfield to parents Ebenezer and Mary(Barnes) Cooley.
He married first wife Hannah Shattuck in MA in 1771 and had three children.
In 1777 Barnes married second wife Eleanor Sloan and had seven more children.
Barnes and Eleanor and their family may have lived in VT(1800 Federal Census places Barnes Cooley in Windham Co. VT) before moving to Otsego County NY in the early 1800s.
He is listed in the 1810 census as B. Cooley in the town of Hartwick when he was in his 60s.In 1820 he is listed as "Barney" and living next to his son Rufus in Hartwick. Eleanor is believed to have died in the 1830s at age 81.In 1840 he lived with his son Rufus in Hartwick, NY.
Barnes, most researchers agree(including a gravestone transcriber in the 1930s), died at the age of 95 or 96 years; some time around 1845. Though family lore says he died in 1849 at the home of his son Rufus in Hartwick NY.
