HERE, IS DEAD - Mrs. Rebecca Hickcox Passes Away At Dodgeville At Age Of Over 91 Years - Came Here As Girl Of 15 Years - Entire Trip Was Made Overland By Team, Passing Through Chicago When There Were But Three Houses Near Fort Dearborn : A.M. Green has returned from Dodgeville, where he attended the funeral services of his sister, Mrs. Rebecca Hickcox. The following obituary under date of Feb. 29, is given in a Dodgeville paper: Died at her home in this city on Sunday evening, Feb 27, Mrs. Clark Hickcox, at the advanced age of 91 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Rebecca Caroline Green was born at Bridgewater, Oneida county, New York, August 1, 1824. She with her parents, moved to Wethersfield, Genesee county, when a child. At the age of 15 she moved again with her parents to Green county,Wis.,making the entire trip by team and passing through Chicago when there were but three houses in that place.
She was married at Mineral Point, Feb 18, 1844, to Clark Hickcox , of Ridgeway, Iowa county, Wis. To this union were born 9 children, seven of whom survive her.
The oldest, George M., died Dec. 7, 1888, and one daughter died in infancy. The surviving children are William C., of Menomonie, Dunn county, Wis.; Clark A., of Claremont, Calif.; Mrs. Laura Jones of Bangor, Wis., Edward M. and Nat D. of Wyoming, this county; Mrs. Ida M. Carpenter of this city, who has cared for her so tenderly for three years and Dan C., of Clarion, Iowa. She also leaves 37 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren and one brother, Marbie A. Green, of Monroe, Green county, Wis., besides many other relatives and friends to mourn the loss of parent, sister and friend.
Deceased was a charter member of the W.R.C. of this city, and was always ready to do her duty in that order as long as health and strength permitted. She was noble, kind and loving, and will be sadly missed by hosts of friends and neighbors.
The funeral services took place at the Congregational church and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. A.H. Schoenfeld, and special music by quartet composed of Mrs. Doris Thomas, Mrs. J.L. Bartle and Messrs. T. Harry Arthur and Aldro Jenks, Jr., with Miss Edna Owens as organist. After the services at the church, the remains were conveyed to Wyoming and laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Wyoming Valley cemetery.
Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were her sons, Wm. C., of Menomonie, and Nat. D., of Spring Green, her brother, Marble Green, of Monroe, Wis., her granddaughter, Mrs. Ethel Hickcox Thompson, of Indianapolis, Ind., her grandsons, Tracy Hickcox of Madison and Guy Hickcox, of Bear Valley, Wis., and her niece, Mrs. Charity Harris, of Postville, Ia.
