Because of the early death of her mother and her father's service in the Civil War, young Annie lived with her paternal grandparents and other relatives in Wake County, North Carolina, and with her father in Cumberland County, North Carolina. She came to Blanco County, Texas, in approximately 1870 since several of her maternal aunts and uncles were living in the Walnut Creek area.
In Blanco County, Annie fell in love with Joel Philip Smith, a cattleman who was 19 years her senior. The two married in 1870 and had the following children:
Frances (Mrs. Reed Yett)
May (died at the age of 15)
Oscar (died at the age of 18)
C. Maud (Mrs. Thomas Yett)
Olive "Ollie" (Mrs. James C. Bacchus/Baccus/Backens)
Sidney (married Lillie Edna Dabney)
Carl (married Bertha Crownover).
Joyce (Mrs. Jeff Hurt)
Annie died in 1890 at the age of 37.
Note: if anyone has knowledge of the location of the grave of Ollie, I would appreciate an email.
