CHARLES RAY HAYES
Charles (Ray) Hayes, of Callaway, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in a local hospital at the age of 74. Ray was born in Columbus, Ind., in 1926 to Charles Raymond Hayes Sr. and Merle Rothrock. His mom was killed in an auto accident, so his Grandparents Rothrock raised him and his brother and sister, along with their own children. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served seven years. He then worked for a tree expert company until he joined the U.S. Air Force. He took his basic training at Syracuse, N.Y., and then rode the Bay Line passenger train into Panama City. He stepped off the train into the beautiful, warm sunshine and said this is home for me. He was stationed at Tyndall AFB Crash Rescue, where he was on the boats by the Tyndall Bridge. While in the Navy, he served on several ships including troop ships, the U.S.S. Hayes, and others. He served during World War II, Korea, and did two tours in Vietnam. Some of the places he went were: St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, Maine, New York, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Arizona, South Carolina, Philippines, Hawaii, Florida, Japan, Guam, Thailand, Taiwan, Iowa, Texas, and others. He spent a total of 27 years in the military. He was the recipient of many ribbons while serving his country in the military, including the Air Force Commendation Medal. Ray was a member of Callaway United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of AFSA and FLO-ALA Locksmith Association. He retired at Patrick AFB in 1976 to Callaway and opened the Callaway Locksmith Shop where he worked for another 15 years. He met his wife of 46 years, Margie Wise, in Panama City and they were married Aug. 9, 1954. He is survived by his wife, Margie Hayes of Callaway; two daughters, Donnieta Hayes of Aiea, Hawaii, Marie Jolly and her husband James of Callaway; son-in-law, Kevin Wilson Sr. of Aiea, Hawaii; five grandchildren: Kevin Wilson of Hawaii, Nicole Wilson of Aiea, Hawaii, Tiffany Jolly, Andrew Jolly and Robert Jolly, all of Callaway; three great-grandchildren: Kaiimi Wilson, Kaiman Wilson, and Kainoa Wilson of Aiea, Hawaii; godson, Christopher Hillier of Marianna; brothers-in-law: David Wise and his wife Lynn of Richwood, Texas, Alton Wise and his wife Ladonia of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Monroe Wise and his wife Memorie of Bayou George, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Moore and Jean Weeks; a brother, Oscar Lee and his wife Betty of Sturgis, Ky.; two sisters, Donnieta Hait and her husband Harvey of Indiana and Patricia Carter of Florida; an unofficial adopted daughter, Sonja Johnson of Hawaii and her son, Zachery Johnson, also of Hawaii. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Tyndall AFB. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, Sept. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m.
