David Clarence Litchfield, Sr. was the son of David J. Litchfield and his wife, Emma J. Fletcher. He was born in Back Bay, Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). He was married to Minnie Lee Smith in 1911 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. They had three children:
1. Orian Linwood Litchfield, born about 1913.
2. James Stanley Litchfield, Sr., born July 22, 1916.
3. David Clarence Litchfield, Jr., born August 17, 1919.
