Fourth of seven children born to Nathan W and Emma Hannah (Sisk) Commons. He was born in Harvey County, Kansas shortly after his family had migrated there from Mannon, IL located in New Boston Township, Mercer County, Illinois.

In the 1880 Census his family is living in Kansas but have moved to El Dorado, Butler County, Kansas; Father Nathan 40 Farmer, Mother Emaline H. 39 Keeping House, and siblings; Bion 19 helping on the farm, Della D 17, Daisey D 13, Earl E 8, Maybel M 2.

On 1 March 1885 they are found in the census records living back in Emma, Harvey County, Kansas; Father N W Commons 45 Farmer, Mother Emma 44, Children; Broie 23, Della 21, Dary 18, Earl 13, Mable 7, Robert 4 & Frank 1.

Sometime between the 1885 census and Earl's death in 1892 the family moved to Oregon. Earl died at the young age of 21. He is buried in the same cemetery as his grandfather Enos Commons 1820 - 1895.
