He married Elizabeth Shetley in Germany in 1767, and three years later they sailed on the British ship "Tyger" and arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on Nov. 19, 1771. After arriving in America, they traveled south on the Great Philadelphia Road, and lived with relatives for a while in Shenandoah Co. Virginia. Traveling farther south they settled and made their home in what is now Gaston Co., North Carolina on Hoyle's Creek and the So. Fork of the Catawba River.
Jacob and Elizabeth had ten children, they were: John Hoffman "Laughing John Hoffman" 1775 – 1876, he married Elizabeth Rhyne; Elizabeth Hoffman 1782 – 1854, she married Jacob H. Rhyne IV; Cathrine Hoffman 1786 – 1860, she married Fred Shrum; Hannah Hoffman 1787 – 1866, she married John Clemmer; Christina Hoffman 1792 – 1849, Fred Shrum; Margaret Hoffman 1795 – 1889, she married Andrew Shrum; Mary Hoffman 1795 – 1840, she married William McCallister; Susan Hoffman 1795, she married James Jenkins; Ann Hoffman 1797, she married John Spencer; and Jacob Shetley Hoffman 1803 – 1891, he married Margaret "Peggy" Rhyne.
He joined the Whig forces during the Revolutionary War, probably to protect his home and family from the advancing British. (Jacob Hofman's SAR Membership Number is 68827 and the U.S. Veterans Gravesites comfirms that Jacob was PRIVATE in the US ARMY REVOLUTIONARY WAR.)
He provided well for his family, building for them a fine two-story log home on a 367 acre farm that was inherited by his oldest son, John (known as Laughing John Hoffman.) In his will he stipulated that his two youngest girls be well schooled. and his youngest son, Jacob, be well schooled both in German and English.
Together they had 10 known children. They were: (1) John Hoffman, b.1775, he married Elizabeth Rhyne and is buried in Perry Co. MO; (2) Elizabeth Hoffman, b.1782, she married Peter Rhyne and they are both buried in Perry Co, MO.; (3) Catherine Hoffman b. 1786, she married Michael Best Rhyne; (4) Hannah Hoffman b. 1787, she married John Clemmer, They were both buried in TN,. (5) Christina Hoffman b. 1792, she married Fred Shrum; (6) Margaret Hoffman 1795, she married Andrew Shrum and she died in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.; (7) Mary Hoffman b 1795, married William McCallister they both died in Gaston Co., NC.; (8) Susan Hoffman 1795, married James Jenkins.; (9) Ann Hoffman b.1797, married John Spencer; (10 Jacob Shetley Hoffman b. 1803, married Margaret Rhyne, they both died in Montana.

Elizabeth Shetley died one day after Jacob in 1816. Both are buried in the same grave at their home place on Hoyles Creek.
