Dick Heller, 71, who lived practically all his life in and near Traer died about 10:30 a. m. Tuesday morning at the hospital near Toledo, where he had been a patient since May 1. He was a victim of diabetes, and had been a cripple two or three years, the result of a leg fracture caused by a fall on ice. For a long time he was able to get about on crutches only with great difficulty He spent some time in the University hospital at Iowa City several months ago, but little could be done for his comfort.
Richard Ellsworth Heller was born on a farm near Traer January 4, 1871. He was one of seven children of John and Katherine Heller, who came to the Traer community near the close of the Civil war. His father bought land northeast of town at $12 per acre and hauled lumber by ox team from Waterloo to build his farm buildings before the birth of Traer. The son, Richard, farmed several years near Traer, but most of his life was spent in town. He was married December 25, 1893, to a young woman from Pennsylvania who had made her home with the Heller family a year or two. She died of typhoid fever less than a year after their marriage. His father died in September 1918, his mother in November, 1925.
Dick is survived by three sisters and a brother Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers and Harvey Heller are living at Newport, Oregon; Mrs. Mary Bennett at Chanute, Kansas and Mrs. Rose Walden, La Porte City, Iowa. Two brothers, Albert and Sam preceded him in death. Mrs. Walden was the only member of the family attending the funeral. The funeral was held at the Diers Funeral Home in Traer yesterday, conducted by the Rev. W. A. Thompson, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Patricia Owens sang two hymns. Mrs. diers accompanied on the piano. Casket bearers were O. O. Owens, Robert H. Smith, Date Gaston, Fred Childs, John Steffen, and John Jacobsen. Burial was in West Union cemetery.
