Patrick was born in Wamego, Kansas, to Harry Ross Kelsey and Minetta Fay Cottrell, the ninth of eleven children. He married Dorothy Elizabeth Thompson on 19 April 1945 in Whittier, California, and they had four children. They divorced in 1963 and he remarried to Helen Pearl Smith in 1972. Patrick died in 1977 in California and was buried near his sister, Helen Kelsey Berndt.
