On May 30, 2004, the local UDC chapter and SCV camp had a Memorial Day service along with a dedication of a plaque on the Confederate monument in Longwood Cemetery in Bedford, VA. The plaque identified the remains of 140 of the 500 Confederate dead whose remains were placed under this monument. The monument has a single inscription which reads: "Our Confederate Dead 1861-1865". This monument was originally erected at Piedmont Hill at the site of one of the seven hospitals in Liberty (now Bedford) by the Bedford Ladies Memorial Association 1875. In 1921, the monument and the remains were moved to Longwood Cemetery and re-dedicated on May 30, 1921 by the same UDC chapter. Only the names of 140 of the 500 are known.

The following comment was added by Bruce Paul, who was so kind as to take the picture of the memorial honoring A.W. Turner and his fallen comrades:

"Augustus is buried in an area that does not have individual monuments... the photo will explain.

Cemetery records have him listed as Turner, A W - He rests in Plot 'Section 1 Lot A Space 126.' "
