James W. Griffin (Cherokee) was the son of John Griffin and Sarah Ocoore (a full blood Cherokee buried at Martin-Reese). His father John Griffin was a white trader who was probably born around 1770; his mother Sarah came to Indian Territory with James in 1834.
Altho, there are earlier graves at the cemetery, James' is the oldest written record in the cemetery.
James married Nancy Melton (buried at Martin-Reese); their daughter Permelia Griffin Martin is buried at Martin-Reese.
