The son of John & Eunice Farewell Adams, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Champion, Jefferson County, New York. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York, September 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Staten Island, New York, October 15 as a private with Battery H, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. Hospitalized for illness ca. July 1863, he afterward was confined to quarters for the same reason. He remained off duty for the rest of the year but despite that re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 23, 1864, at Arlington, Virginia. Poor health continued, and on June 14, 1864, he was admitted to York U.S. Hospital. He never returned to active duty and discharged by general order August 1, 1865, at Elmira, New York.

While a patient in York, he married Susan Fahs August 6, 1864, and fathered Ida B. (b. 05/26/66 - married a Witta), Ella L, (b. 04/07/68 - married a Shenberger), Seth E. (b. 08/03/70, Edward C. (b. 11/07/72), Mary L. (b. 03/09/74), John H. (b. 05/02/76), Carleton G. (b. 11/02/80, d. 05/24/89), Gertrude F. (b. 03/01/83, d. 05/23/89), Walter S. (b. 05/21/85), and Kenneth W. (b. 04/15/09 [calculated], d. 05/12/09). In 1880, he lived in Cumberland County working as a sewing machine agent but by 1890 was residing in York where he died of consumption.
