Joseph William "J.W." Griffiths, 91, passed away 3:00 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2012 at his residence with his loving wife at his bedside.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Mark Hutson officiating. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to a Charity of the Donor's Choice; and will be accepted at the funeral home.

J.W. was a salesman for Illinois Electric Company in Marion.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Herrin.

J.W. was born November 20, 1920 in Herrin, IL to Flota Mae (McMillan) Griffiths Carroll.

(Richard John "Dickie" Griffiths adopted both J.W and his brother. Their birth father is unknown.)

J.W. was united in marriage with Marie Hampton on June 6, 1947 in Chicago, IL.

Surviving are, his wife of 64 years, Marie Griffiths of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie "Stevie" and Herb Strong of Knoxville, TN; two grandsons, Brian and Dana Strong of Knoxville, TN, David and Thao Strong of Knoxville, TN; two great granddaughters, Allison and Brooke Strong of Knoxville, TN and a sister-in-law, Lora Mae Hargrove of Herrin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd Griffiths.
