Joseph Montague was born 26 Jan 1859 in Westminster Township, Middlesex, Ontario, to Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Sinclair) Montague. As a child, he immigrated with his parents into Michigan in 1868. They settled in Clinton County, Michigan, where they farmed. He married Maude Leona Borden 13 October 1886 at Owosso, Shiawassee, Michigan. In 1900 they were residing in Lakefield, Saginaw, Michigan, where Joseph was an engineer in a saw mill. The family moved to Pierce County, Washington, with Maude's mother and her family sometime between 1905 and 1909.
Joseph and Maude had nine children: Mae, Ethel Gertrude and Linnie Pearl died in childhood in Michigan. Bertha Mae, Mary Lodema, Leroy, Charlie, and Jennie Allegra were all born in Michigan and moved with their parents to Washington state as children. Josephine Irene was born in Elbe Twp., Pierce, Washington. Joseph Montague died 26 Jan 1909 at age 50 leaving a widow and six children.
