John is the son of David Sheldon and Charlotte Bell Sheldon and the husband of Viola Scott Sheldon. He served in the 57th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F, as a Union soldier during the Civil War. He received a saber wound in the chest at the battle of Arkansas Rock and was discharged at Atlanta, Georgia.
