David Sheldon was the son of Charlotte (Bell) and David Sheldon, who were married April 25, 1841 in Hancock County, Ohio. After his father's early death, Charlotte remarried in 1849 to John J. Heater. His brother and sister, J. J. and Mary, went to Licking County, Ohio with their mother and stepfather, but David lived with his grandparents, Abner and Mercy Bell in Hancock County, Ohio in 1850 and also with them in Iowa in 1860. His grandfather, Abner Bell, left David $100.00 in his will in 1871.
