James Crombie was born about 1737 in Andover, MA. James and his wife Mary, with five children, came to Rindge, NH, in June of 1772. Mr. Crombie was a carpenter and joiner, then called housewrights. James and Mary resided in West Rindge with their family and had six more children. In the Revolution James was clerk in Capt. Hale's Co. in 1775, he was a signatory of the "Association Test" in Rindge and a Lieut. in Capt. Smith's Co. in 1776. He was a Lieut. in Col. Nathan Hale's Regiment. While in Col. Hale's Regiment he was injured by a fall from his horse and permitted to return to his home. James Crombie died Oct. 7, 1802, aged 65 years.
