Roland Franklin Baker, 83, of Fredericksburg, passed from this life on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Hughes Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Born May 12, 1927 to Robert F. and Pearl Nash Baker, he was a lifelong resident of the Fredericksburg area. A Navy veteran of World War II, Roland served in the Pacific Theater. For 50 years he worked as a well-known shoe repairman and shoe store owner of Bakers Shoe Repair in Fredericksburg.

Roland was a member of Kings Highway Baptist Church. He was a self-made natural musician, having played fiddle and guitar, sung tenor in church choirs, led congregational singing, and sung in male quartets including the Gospelight Quartet. Later in life Roland was an ordained minister at Montague Baptist Church in King George.

Survivors include his wife, Helen H. Baker; three sons, Ronald E. Baker of Fredericksburg, David R. Baker of Fredericksburg, and Russell F. Baker of Spotsylvania; two daughters, Bonnie P. Baker-Day of Reidsville, NC, and Robyn B. Pates of Falmouth; six grandchildren, Ryan, Rendall, Jacob and Garrett Baker, John W. Pates III and Katelyn Pates; and one great-grandson, Riley Baker.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with the Rev. Carlin Dempsey officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
