Bjeret [ Berit ] Larsdatter, daughter of Lars Helgeson inherited the [Knutson] family's land in the Juvsrødningen Farm through her fathers lineage. Apparently the land was in the family for at least a century or more. By tradition or law, her land was put in her tenant farmer husbands name. Upon the death of Bjeret's husband, Knud Engebretsen, in 1851 , the deed [to the farm] was conveyed to Lars, their firstborn son.
In 1853 Lars returned the land to his mother and she in turn sold the little farm the same year for 400 spd to Halvor Østensen.
The money she received paid for the family's immigration to the USA. They landed in New York in May 1853.
Many Knutson ancestors have said that Bjeret Larsdatter Knutson immigrated to the USA with her 5 children, however 6 children have been accounted for.
The 6 children are listed in the Bygdebog section about Juvsrødningen, page 961 of the book by the Sigdal historian Andreas Mørch.
According to information I have gathered, Lars and Ingeborg Kittilsdatter married on May 6, 1853 in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway -
Bjeret and her children are said to have left Norway the previous month, April of 1853, arriving in New York May 07, 1853. Lars is always named as one of the children who accompanied his mother to America [Mari's name is occasionally omitted from these lists] but if Lars was married in Norway in May and Bjeret and her children either left Norway or arrived in New York in April, than Lars and his wife could not have traveled with his mother, and therefore, came to America at a later date.
In the Bygdebog section about Juvsrødningen, page 961 of the book by the Sigdal historian Andreas Mørch all 6 children of Bjeret and Knud are listed as I have recorded.
