Edward was the son of Abraham Hite Bowman and his wife, Mary Atwood Tomlinson. He married Eliza Quigley Morton, daughter of Henry Clay Morton and his wife, Mary Amanda Quigley, on October 26, 1875 at the College Street Presbyterian Church in Louisville, KY.

They had four children - Bell Quigley, John Morton (died as infant), Edward Stanley and Henry Morton Bowman.

Edward and Eliza lived for many years in Louisville, KY. After the death of Eliza in 1903, Edward moved to Indiana, where he bought a large farm 2 1/2 miles northwest of Morgantown. He named it Lynnwood, after the estate where he was born. On August 10, 1904 in Shelby county, he married his second wife, V. Aurilla Jeffers.
