Thomas Jefferson Holcomb was born 21 Jan1856 near Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas, son of William Jefferson “Jeff” Holcomb (b. 27 Jan 1827 in Washington County, Arkansas; d. 9 Jan 1869 in Cherokee County, Texas) and Martha Gibson (b. 16 Dec 1825 in Monroe County, Mississippi; d. 18 Dec 1859 in Cherokee County, Texas). They were married 22 Apr 1847 in Cherokee County, Texas.
Martha is buried in the Cook/Gibson Family Plot in Salem Cemetery, Cherokee County, Texas.
William J. is presumed to be buried in the Cook/Gibson Family Plot as well, although rusted metal tombstone markers no longer bear a record.

William Jefferson Holcomb married three times. His second marriage on 4 Oct 1860 in Cherokee County was to a Mrs. Penelope Snipes, (b. circa 1830 in North Carolina; d. circa 1864 in ?Cherokee County), widow of Robert P. Snipes. Her maiden name is not known at this time, but possibilities include Prince or Pearce. Her burial place is not known.
They had a son, James W. Holcomb (b. 24 Jul 1861 in Cherokee County; d. 2 Apr 1887 in Ellis County), who is also buried in Telico Cemetery. His tombstone includes the inscription “son of W. J. & Penelope Holcomb.”

His third marriage on 1 Jun 1865 in Cherokee County was to Martha A. Hamilton (b. circa 1840 in ?Franklin County, Tennessee) daughter of John Dobson Hamilton and Mary Ann McLein. There were no issues . It is this marriage that I believe is confused with Martha Gibson, who to my knowledge, had no middle initial.

After William J. Holcomb died, Martha A. (Hamilton) Holcomb married Archibald O. Stewart on 31 Aug 1870 in Cherokee County.

Both are buried in the Cook/Gibson Family Plot in Salem Cemetery, Cherokee County, Texas.

Thomas Jefferson Holcomb appears on the census of 4 Jun 1860 on p. 410, Beat 1, Family #5, Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas, listed as T. J. Holcombe by the census taker, age 3. I have not been successful in finding him in the 1870 or 1880 Censuses.

He moved from Cherokee County to Ellis County probably in late 1879 or early 1880, based on the tax rolls of Cherokee County listing him as a resident of Ellis County starting in 1880. It's not until 1883 that he appears on the Ellis County tax rolls.

Thomas married Margaret “Maggie” Ratcliff, daughter of Samuel Parker Ratcliff and Nancy Ellen Walker, on 17 May1882 in Ellis County, Texas. He was the Constable in Ennis and owned a farm of 60 acres with 60 head of cattle when he fell ill with typhoid fever and died 22 Oct 1885 at the age of 29. He was buried in the Kirkpatrick graveyard [now Telico Cemetery], about 7 miles east northeast of Ennis.

Maggie was left with their two small children: Claude, born 10 Mar 1883 and Olive "Ollie", born 20 Oct 1884. She sold the cattle and worked as a seamstress to pay off debts. In the Fall of 1889, she sold her home and traveled by train to Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas, where her parents had moved and homesteaded land.

Maggie reared her children in Quanah and never remarried. She died 12 Sep 1951 in Quanah at the age of 94, and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Quanah, where her parents are also buried.
