Eliza Butler was the daughter of Edward Butler, a Revolutionary War hero, and Isabella Fowler, daughter of a British officer.
When their father died in Tennessee in 1803, Eliza and her siblings became the wards of Andrew and Rachel Jackson. As with their other Butler wards, Eliza Butler married John Donelson, a nephew of the Jacksons. (They were both in New Orleans when the City celebrated Andrew Jackson's victory over the British.)
