Wellington Leader May 8, 1969

DeWitt H. Laughter, 71, of Wellington, died at 1:40 a.m. in Roosevelt County General Hospital, Portales, NM. He was in Portales, his former home, on a business trip and suffered a heart attack Thursday, May 1.

Mr. Laughter lived in Wellington during the 1920's operating an auto body shop. Later he lived at Clayton, NM for many years and moved to Portales four years ago. He and Mrs. Laughter returned to Wellington in November 1968.

Born in Columbus County, Arkansas, he and Miss Bell Harris were married in Wellington February 11, 1928.

He was a Baptist.

Surviving Mr. Laughter are his wife, Mrs. Bell Laughter of Wellington; three sons and two daughters: Harold A. Laughter and Joe Laughter of Bountiful, Utah; Sp/5 Elmer DeWitt Laughter, U.S. Army in Vietnam; Mrs. Mary Lynn Gay, wife of T/Sgt. Richard Gay, U.S. Air Force in Germany; and Mrs. Velma Niccum of Wellington.

Other survivors are three sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Lonnie Campbell of Thorndale; Mrs. Girtha Merrell of Seligman, AZ; Mrs. Aleene Marshall of Winslow, AZ; Tracy Laughter of Lubbock; Marvin Laughter of Redding, CA; and Jack Laughter of Lawton, OK.

There are 13 grandchildren.

One son, James Edward preceded Mr. Laughter in death.
